Live Illustration - latest work
What Do I Do?
I turn up at your event or meeting, and I draw!
I am a live illustrator specialising in sustainability illustration, and highlighting environmental issues through my work. I’ve worked with Dove to promote their new recycled plastic bottles, Nespresso to highlight their recycling options and sustainable coffee-sourcing, and Edinburgh University to record improvements to their sustainability practices as a university. (Reducing waste, encouraging recycling on campus, and finding ways to make public transport and biking to university easier for staff and students.)
Live Illustrating for Brands
Postcard sized portraits can be completed in 5-10 minutes.
Digital portraits are also available (created on an iPad Pro and emailed over)
Illustrations can be created on a while-you-wait basis, or if a photo is provided, the customer can enjoy the event while I draw.
Live illustration includes; custom portraits, hand-lettering, personalisation, packaging illustration, iPad illustration, live mural and window installations, and portraits.
Recently I have been doing a lot of window painting, but I also offer digital illustration (wandering through events, making drawings on my iPad) as well as graphic recording on good old fashioned sheets of paper. Remember those?
I am dedicated to running a sustainable, environmentally-conscious business, and I love working with clients on how they can communicate their sustainability goals and practices. Let’s all be nicer to the planet.
Location / travel
I am based in Berwick upon Tweed, in the UK which is conveniently located on the East Coast railway line. I can be in London in 3.5 hours, and international airports Edinburgh or Newcastle in 45 minutes.
Live illustration is charged at an hourly/day rate. Please get in touch for details.
Live Window Illustration / Installation Painting for Dove
In March 2019 I was commissioned to create a live window painting at the 12th Knot in London, visualising Dove’s sustainability commitment to go for 100% recycled plastic bottles. Not all of the attendees’ first language was English, so visualising the commitments was essential.
Live Portrait Painting - House of Fraser

Product customisation - Stella Artois
In 2018 I was lucky enough to tour around for Stella Artois, drawing on chalices in Newcastle upon Tyne, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bristol and at Ascot Races.
I personalised each chalice in around 5 minutes or less. This included a hand-lettered name and/or message, as well as a small skyline or landmark illustration. (See images below). In 9 hours at Ascot races I personalised over 100 chalices. Being able to draw in front of the public, chat and be friendly, and create something special that customers remember is my superpower.
I created a sheet of bespoke designs before the event, all using the Stella Artois logo colours.
What is Graphic Recording?
Graphic recording is also known as scribing. It's the live drawing of a meeting or event by me, the scribe. As people discuss and explain, I capture their ideas on large pieces of paper, (or one very large roll of paper!) bringing together the essential elements of the event. As you can imagine, this is a great way to disseminate the outcome of a meeting after the event has happened.
The sustainability department at Edinburgh University decorated their office with my illustrations after the event, as well as using digital copies of the images to disseminate information after the event.
Who can use graphic recording?
Graphic recording works really well for everyone. Businesses, brands and organisations spend a lot of effort running meetings and events. Graphic recording can give an extra, exciting and innovative visual element, bring the whole thing to life, and create a lasting visual record. In Academic settings, live illustration / graphic recording can be especially useful for capturing large amounts of information visually. See below for examples from a medical academic research session.
Going Digital - iPad Live event Illustration and graphic recording
For the BIG Creative Teachers’ Event 2019 (images below), my iPad was hooked up to a large screen, and attendees were able to see drawings taking shape in real time.
I was able to drop in on different workshops, and know that everyone in the foyer was seeing the illustrations happen while I reported live. We used Apple TV technology to link the iPad and the TV screen, and a strong WiFi connection. While i’m not a technological superstar, I am able to give some guidance on setting up iPad connections for event illustration.
Why use Live Illustration or Graphic Recording?
People think visually! Audiences and workshop participants respond really well to a tangible, visualisation of the event they're attending. It's even more exciting to see your own ideas contribute in real-time to this. Seeing ideas appear on the page can encourage more people to participate in the discussions taking place.
Images are easily shared on social media, hashtags can be introduced, and people love to watch art happen before their eyes.
